Gibson decided to strap one of the engines onto his back to make skating easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything went smoothly\u2014at one point, he accelerated so quickly that it startled even him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.iottawa.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/01\/17101848\/ad_4nxf-5_d8jixoogl4smnhf5ukzrzd1opy8y0bslleqnbmjpogtpco8bdajaeg6mvuq2yqccepfblzl7oyqefwitosjmr1cmtrvykdfxvndqnecejbmwzfaorznkjilu3_xcbm3nskkeytlwbrbrvm0ulcur4yc-uzqx.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Design_Features\"><\/span>Design Features<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brydon Gibson&#8217;s &#8220;jetpack&#8221; has several unique features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>38-centimetre propeller<\/strong> attached to a wooden frame.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A throttle system made from a <strong>bicycle brake lever and cable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soft straps<\/strong> crafted from an old backpack for comfort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During one test, Gibson sped across the Ottawa River at 40 km\/h. While the device lacks brakes, it does have a power shutoff switch for emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For added safety, Gibson included several features in his latest prototype and advises having another person present when using the device. Since the propeller is strapped to the user\u2019s back, accessing it alone is nearly impossible. His tinkering began during his teenage years when he built an electric motor in his parents\u2019 basement, although it never made it to the testing phase. From a young age, he collected discarded electronics and parts from roadsides, building a home workshop in his parents\u2019 basement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, Gibson has created remote-controlled planes, boats, and even a homemade hovercraft. Once, he almost lost a finger while working on a project, but he has avoided any severe injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Is_Brydon_Gibson\"><\/span>Who Is Brydon Gibson?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an early age, Brydon was obsessed with building and inventing. This passion led him to pursue a degree in computer systems engineering at <strong>Carleton University<\/strong>. After graduation, he joined <strong>BlackBerry QNX<\/strong>, a company specializing in autonomous vehicle technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the pandemic, Gibson worked remotely and had extra time on his hands. Instead of meeting friends, he dedicated himself to his inventive pursuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brydon\u2019s younger sister, Jess Gibson, also tested his invention on the frozen Ottawa River. She described the experience as a unique and enjoyable activity, likening it to skating but in a much lazier way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even <a href=\"https:\/\/iottawa.net\/uk\/eternal-vynahidnyk-stiv-mann-ta-jogo-vnesok-u-rozvytok-osvity-v-ottavi\">Gibson\u2019s mother<\/a> gave the invention a try, with no serious accidents reported during testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public learned about Brydon Gibson\u2019s invention after his sister posted videos of him testing it on TikTok. The footage of him racing across the ice quickly gained popularity, attracting attention to the young inventor. He even received a few remote marriage proposals from admirers among his sister\u2019s followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brydon continues to refine his invention, with plans to upgrade to a larger propeller for increased speed and thrust.
