This is a remarkable achievement for a small business that has served its community for over a century. It’s an inspiring example that connects generations and preserves valuable traditions. What is known about the pharmacy and its owners? Let’s dive into the story with I Ottawa.
How It All Began
The story of Brisson Pharmacy began in 1921 when Herman Brisson, along with his wife and seven children, moved into a house on Dalhousie Street. The owner opened a modest pharmacy on the first floor, while the large family lived on the second floor.
In 2021, the City of Ottawa presented a commemorative plaque to the current owner, Jean Brisson, Herman’s grandson, to mark this milestone. Jean recalls starting his work in the family business at just 10 years old, stocking shelves and delivering prescriptions by bicycle. In one of his French-language interviews, he shared how he often sat and observed his father at work.

The Brisson Family
The Brisson Pharmacy and its owners have long been beloved by the community, becoming a cornerstone of Lower Town for dispensing medicine. Stories are told of how Herman would arrive at the pharmacy early in the morning, even before opening hours, to prepare emergency prescriptions for neighbors in need.
In the 1940s, Herman’s wife, Hélène Brisson, opened a flower shop called Fleurs Louise on the same street. She was known for her generosity, often giving away as many flowers as she sold.
Herman Brisson received his early education at Académie De La Salle, later graduating from the University of Ottawa. He then studied pharmaceutical science at the University of Toronto. After successfully passing his exams, Herman returned to Ottawa and purchased a pharmacy, which would prove to be a lasting success. The pharmacy moved twice before settling on Dalhousie Street, where the family lived and worked.

Jean Brisson: A Pharmacist Like His Father and Grandfather
The Brisson Pharmacy is a family business passed down through generations. However, Jean Brisson nearly chose a different path. As a young man, he was interested in architecture and considered declining the offer to take over the family business.
A little about the family: Herman and Hélène had seven children—two daughters and five sons. In 1960, two of their sons, Jean-Herman and Ferdinand, took over the business. Ferdinand became the primary owner, and in 1984, his son, Jean, continued the family tradition.
Jean has worked at the pharmacy for over 37 years and has no regrets about his decision. After completing his studies, he realized his heart belonged in the pharmacy. He found fulfillment in interacting with customers, which was missing from his studies.
Jean recalls how the neighborhood, once predominantly French-speaking, gradually became 50% English-speaking. Today, the pharmacy serves not only local residents but also people from across Ottawa and its outskirts. While the number of French-speaking customers has decreased, the pharmacy’s importance to the community remains strong.

Enduring Traditions
Some things never change. Brisson Pharmacy remains focused on personalized service, customer well-being, and maintaining a high level of professionalism. This Franco-Ontarian business has preserved its core values through generations.
The commemorative plaque honoring the pharmacy’s 100th anniversary is a touching gesture. Jean Brisson noted that it’s not something one thinks about daily, but it’s a reminder to pause and reflect on the fact that the family business has been serving for a century. He, along with his family, takes immense pride in this legacy.
