Fiber Optic Systems

Development of Fiber Optic Splitting in Ottawa

The invention of fiber optic splitting technology can be attributed to Dr. Joseph Strauss, who was born in Slovakia in 1946. He studied nuclear physics in the Czech Republic before moving to Alberta to continue his research in physics. In 1974, Strauss earned his PhD and accepted a position at Bell Northern Research in Ottawa to work on fiber optic splitting. He relocated to Ottawa and advanced from an entry-level role to leadership.

In 1981, Strauss co-founded JDS Optics, later renamed JDS Fitel. With his deep expertise in fiber optic systems, keen business acumen, and an innovative management style that was ahead of its time, Strauss transformed JDS Optics into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of optical components.

Among the company’s groundbreaking achievements was the development of fiber optic splitting technology, which enabled billions of people worldwide to access high-speed Internet.

The fiber optic splitting technology was developed by JDS Optics in the 1980s. The company’s engineers worked tirelessly to enhance the capacity of telephone networks by splitting light beams into separate wavelengths, each carrying an individual data stream. This process, known as wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), allowed for a dramatic increase in data transfer capacity.

JDS Optics’ innovation laid the groundwork for the Internet’s high-speed infrastructure. Many of the company’s employees who held stock options became millionaires following the successful implementation of this technology.

In the 21st century, Strauss’ invention remains fundamental to modern life, with numerous systems built on his groundbreaking work. His contributions to fiber optic technology have shaped the way the world connects and communicates.
